II Corinthians 1:1-11
2 Highlights in the Text
1. Affliction
- "flipsis": pressure
2. Comfort
- does not mean ease
- "para-kaleo": by the sight of/to call;
to call along sight
- "com-fort": with strength, courage, or bravery
* God provides comfort to believers.
* Righteous suffering will be comforted and rewarded. Suffering for sin will be chastised.
v. I Peter 4:12-14
* Suffering for Christ is abudant, so is the comfort of God.
Purpose of Affliction and Comfort
We are afflicted and comforted, so that we...
1. Become comforters of the afflicted.
v. 4
2. Grow in maturity and strengthen others in their walk. v. 6
- Without affliction, we are proud, unconcerned, and unfinished.
3. Do not trust in ourselves, but in God alone. v. 9
- trusting God wholeheartedly
v. Ps. 119:71: afflicted to learn from His statutes
4. Become a prayerful church. v. 11
* We get the benefits, and God receives all the glory.
